Pregnancy is a special time in a woman's life, but it's also
a time when she needs to be extra careful about what she eats. There are certain
foods that can be harmful to a developing baby, and it's important for
expectant mothers to avoid them to ensure a healthy pregnancy. Here are five
foods that pregnant women should avoid:
Raw or undercooked meats: Raw or undercooked meats can be contaminated
with harmful bacteria, such as salmonella and listeria, which can cause serious
illness in pregnant women and their developing babies. Be sure to fully cook
all meats and avoid deli meats, unless they are heated to a steaming hot
temperature.
Raw fish and shellfish: Raw fish and shellfish can also
contain harmful bacteria and parasites that can cause food poisoning. Pregnant
women should avoid raw sushi, sashimi, and other raw fish dishes, as well as
raw oysters and other raw shellfish.
Soft cheeses: Soft cheeses, such as feta, brie, and
camembert, can be contaminated with listeria, a bacterium that can cause
serious illness in pregnant women and their babies. It's best to avoid these
types of cheese during pregnancy, or to be sure they are thoroughly cooked
before eating.
Unpasteurized milk and juices: Unpasteurized milk and juices
can contain harmful bacteria that can cause food poisoning. It's important for
pregnant women to only consume pasteurized versions of these products to reduce
the risk of illness.
Caffeine: Caffeine is a stimulant that can cross the placenta and affect a developing baby's heart rate and sleep patterns. While it's okay to have small amounts of caffeine during pregnancy, it's important to limit intake to 200 mg or less per day. This is equivalent to about one 12-ounce cup of coffee.
By avoiding these foods during pregnancy, expectant mothers
can help ensure a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
